Granite Countertop Care

Outdoor granite faces UV exposure, Texas heat, rain, and heavy cooking use. Follow this guide to keep your countertops sealed, stain-free, and looking sharp for 20+ years.

Maintenance Schedule

After Every Use

  • Wipe up spills immediately — especially acidic liquids (red wine, citrus, BBQ sauce, mustard, vinegar)
  • Wipe down the full surface with warm water and a few drops of mild dish soap
  • Dry completely with a soft, clean microfiber towel — never let water pool
  • Remove food debris with a soft sponge; never use abrasive scrub pads

Weekly

  • Deep-clean with a pH-neutral stone cleaner (avoid bleach, ammonia, or vinegar-based cleaners)
  • Inspect the surface for dull spots — early sign the sealer is wearing
  • Check grout lines and caulk around the countertop edge for cracks or gaps
  • Rinse off pollen, dust, and outdoor debris with clean water and dry thoroughly

Every 6 Months

  • Perform the water bead test: drop water on the surface — if it soaks in rather than beading, it's time to reseal
  • Clean thoroughly and allow to dry completely (24 hours minimum before sealing)
  • Apply a penetrating granite sealer with a lint-free cloth, working in small sections
  • Buff off excess sealer before it dries; allow 24–48 hours cure time before use

Annually / Seasonal

  • Inspect for chips, cracks, or lifting edges — contact 4SO if repairs are needed
  • Re-caulk any gaps between the countertop and the frame or backsplash
  • Cover the countertop with a weatherproof tarp or fitted cover during extended non-use periods
  • Before winter: clean, seal, and cover — Texas winters are mild but freeze-thaw cycles can stress stone

Do's and Don'ts

Do These

  • Use a cutting board — always
  • Wipe spills immediately, especially acids
  • Use pH-neutral or stone-specific cleaners
  • Dry the surface after cleaning
  • Use trivets or hot pads under cookware
  • Seal every 6–12 months (outdoor granite needs more frequent sealing than indoor)
  • Cover when not in use for extended periods
  • Use soft microfiber cloths and non-abrasive sponges

Never Do These

  • Cut directly on the granite surface
  • Use bleach, ammonia, or vinegar-based cleaners
  • Let acidic spills sit — BBQ sauce, citrus, wine, mustard
  • Place extremely hot pans directly on the stone
  • Use abrasive scrub pads or steel wool
  • Drag heavy or sharp objects across the surface
  • Use generic household cleaners (Windex, 409, Lysol)
  • Power wash at high pressure directly on the stone

Stain Removal Guide

Always test any treatment on a small, inconspicuous area first. If in doubt, contact 4SO before attempting removal.

Grease / Oil
Moderate

Apply a paste of baking soda and water (or acetone for stubborn stains). Cover with plastic wrap, tape edges, let sit 24 hours. Remove and rinse. Repeat if needed.

BBQ Sauce / Ketchup / Mustard
Act Fast

Wipe immediately. If dried, use a plastic scraper to lift residue, then clean with warm soapy water. Never use acidic cleaners — they will etch the stone.

Red Wine / Beer
Act Fast

Blot (don't wipe) immediately. Apply hydrogen peroxide (3%) with a few drops of ammonia-free dish soap. Let sit 5 minutes, rinse, and dry. Reseal after treatment.

Rust
Act Fast

Use a commercial rust remover specifically formulated for natural stone. Do NOT use standard rust removers — they contain acids that will etch granite. Contact 4SO if the stain is deep.

Mold / Mildew
Moderate

Mix 1 part hydrogen peroxide with 2 parts water. Apply with a soft cloth, let sit 10 minutes, scrub gently, rinse thoroughly. Ensure the surface dries completely.

Hard Water / Mineral Deposits
Low Risk

Use a stone-safe calcium/lime remover. Avoid citric acid or vinegar. For mild deposits, a paste of baking soda and water applied gently can help. Reseal after treatment.

Soot / Smoke
Low Risk

Wipe with warm water and mild dish soap. For heavy soot, use a stone-safe degreaser. Rinse and dry completely. Check sealer integrity after cleaning.

How to Seal Your Granite Countertop

Outdoor granite should be sealed every 6–12 months. Here's the exact process:

1

Clean First

Wash the entire surface with warm water and mild dish soap. Remove all grease, food residue, and debris. Rinse completely.

2

Dry Completely

Allow the countertop to dry for a minimum of 24 hours. Sealer applied to damp stone will not penetrate properly and will peel.

3

Apply Sealer

Pour a small amount of penetrating sealer onto a lint-free cloth. Work in 2×2 ft sections, applying in a circular motion. Do not let it pool.

4

Buff & Cure

Wipe off excess sealer before it dries (within 3–5 minutes). Buff with a clean dry cloth. Allow 24–48 hours cure time before use.

Recommended Sealers for Outdoor Granite

Use a penetrating (impregnating) sealer rated for outdoor use. Trusted brands include Granite Gold Sealer, Miracle Sealants 511 Impregnator, and Tenax Proseal. Avoid wax-based or topical sealers — they sit on the surface and peel in outdoor conditions.
